fentanyl Actiq is prescripetion medication used to treats breakthrough cancer pain that is not controlled by other medicines. It can also be used as part of surgical anesthesia. This medicine is not used for treating pain that is not cancer-related, such as migraine headaches or pain after surgery
Fentanyl Actiq belongs to a group of drugs called opioid agonists or narcotic pain medications. Therefore it works by changing the way the brain and nervous system respond to pain.
Fentanyl Actiq Dosage
Before determining the dosage of Fentanyl Actiq in a patient, it is necessary to ensure that the patient’s chronic pain is controlled by a background morphine treatment and that there are no more than 4 painful paroxysms per day.
The initial dose of Actiq should be 200 micrograms, with dose increases, if necessary, according to the available dosage range (200, 400, 600, 800, 1200 and 1600 micrograms). Patients should be carefully monitored until the dose provides effective analgesia and acceptable side effects with a single Actiq unit per paroxysmal pain. This dose is defined as the effective dose.
During titration, if satisfactory analgesia is not achieved within 30 minutes of administration of a first Actiq unit (ie, 15 minutes after the dissolution of a unit of d Actiq), a second Actiq unit of the same assay may be used. In no case should more than two Actiq units be used to treat the same paroxysmal pain. With a dosage of 1600 micrograms, it will likely be necessary to administer a second dose only in a minority of patients.
